Best Roaster is a peer-assessed, uncompromising challenge, focused on the real-world skills and expertise of the world’s best coffee roasters.  More than that, it is a celebration of the hard work and dedication that goes into being one of the world’s best coffee roasters.

This year's mandatory coffee has emerged from an exciting collaboration with Daterra Coffee in Brazil's Cerrado Mineiro Region. Gabriel and his team have thoughtfully selected an exceptionally unique coffee for the competition, unveiling not only a new varietal, Guarany, but also introducing a custom processing and drying protocol tailored specifically for it.

“Guarany is a pre-cultivar, meaning it has not been launched as an established varietal yet. It came to us at Daterra through our research partnership with the Agronomic Institute of Campinas and is a hybrid of Coffea Arabica and Coffea Racemosa (hence an “Aramosa”) – two different coffee species. From a technical point of view it is not correct to say Aramosa is the varietal – it is a hybrid style, just like Sarchimor (Villa Sarchi + Timor) or Arabusta (Coffea Arabica + Coffea Robusta). Within the population of Aramosa hybrids, we selected a lineage based on maturation uniformity, great sensory profile but as well resistance to deceases. At Daterra we have come to call this lineage Guarany, and with its unique flavour profile we thought it would be the perfect Mandatory Coffee for the competition!”
